Earthen-Bamboo Construction Studio
Design and build low-carbon earthen and bamboo structures combining local craft with engineered rigour.

The ask
Launch a design-build studio in Bangladesh that applies the earthen-bamboo construction methodology — rammed earth, cob, and treated bamboo structurally combined — to deliver certified, climate-resilient buildings for schools, clinics, and rural commercial clients at a lower embodied-carbon and lower lifecycle cost than concrete-and-brick.
Why now
Anna Heringer's METI school in Rudrapur won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and remains structurally sound after 18 years — proof that earthen-bamboo construction performs in Bangladesh's monsoon climate. The EDGE certification standard now quantifies and rewards embodied-carbon reduction, making green credentials bankable for donor-funded projects. International NGOs and government-funded school and clinic programmes are beginning to specify low-carbon construction in tender documents — but almost no Bangladeshi firms can deliver it at scale.
Why Bangladesh
Bangladesh has an abundance of the two key materials: alluvial clay soil and bamboo, both at near-zero cost compared to cement. The country needs to build or rebuild hundreds of thousands of rural structures as climate displacement accelerates; doing so in concrete locks in carbon and flood vulnerability simultaneously. Earthen construction has dramatically better thermal mass than thin brick — critical as wet-bulb temperatures rise. And Bangladesh already has a tradition of skilled clay craftspeople in the ceramics and pottery sector whose skills transfer directly.
As a business
Revenue is project-based design-and-build contracts, primarily from NGOs, multilateral donors, government programmes, and socially-motivated private clients — schools, health clinics, eco-lodges, and offices. Projects typically range from ৳30 lakh to ৳5 crore. Margin comes from in-house material sourcing (the studio controls its own bamboo treatment and clay preparation) and from the premium clients pay for the Aga-Khan-lineage design credibility. Training programmes for construction workers and architecture students add a recurring revenue line.
Economics
Move the sliders to model your own earthen-bamboo construction studio. Defaults are order-of-magnitude estimates — pressure-testing them is part of what a founder pitches us.

What ZEPH would back
An architect-builder who has already completed at least one earthen-bamboo building in Bangladesh with documented structural performance data, and has a pipeline of at least two signed or near-signed projects. We are particularly interested in founders who can show a replicable design system — not one-off masterpieces — and who are training a local construction workforce.
Impact
A single earthen-bamboo project displaces roughly 80 tonnes of CO₂e compared with an equivalent concrete-and-brick structure — replacing 15 tonnes of cement (≈ 13 tCO₂e) and 50,000 fired bricks (≈ 12 tCO₂e of coal-fired kiln emissions) while sequestering carbon in bamboo framing. At eight projects per year the studio prevents roughly 640 tCO₂e annually — the equivalent of removing 140 petrol cars from Dhaka's roads. Because materials are sourced locally (alluvial clay, bamboo, rice-husk ash), the FX drain of imported cement and rebar is eliminated: a ৳80 lakh project saves roughly $4,000 in cement and steel imports. The studio also transfers craft skills that have nearly disappeared from Bangladesh's formal construction workforce, creating durable employment in underserved rural districts.
